Laying Awake

Lost track of hours
It's quite late
Well past bedtime
Sleep can't wait

Eyes draw heavy
Drowsy sets in
Crawl into bed
Let sleeping begin

Lay in the dark
Thoughts dance around
Mind won't quiet
Hear every sound

Blankets too warm
Rest doesn't come
Closed eyes into nothing
Feel the heart drum

Wish to fall
Hope to sleep
Make it happen
Nice and deep

But still nothing
Heart quickens beats
Head races on
Now sweaty sheets

Frustration sets in
Need some air
Check the clock
But why care

It's not happening
This is reality
Thinking of life
Ponder our mortality

Impenetrable mental block
Delayed spiritual quest
Emotional roller coaster
Quite physically stressed

Is the pain profound?
Is the heart blue?
Is the mind engaged?
Is everything true?

Who is it?
Where are they?
What are they doing?
Why not there today?

Look deep within
Answer is known
Trust and believe
You're not alone
